Informed consent for surgery in ODS, should include:

A full discussion of available treatments

Description of prposed surgery, helped by hand drawn diagrams, or electronic aids, including video clips of procedures

Description of all potential risks & complications

Giving the patient a clear idea about the controversery between experts of how best to treat ODS

Deciding what is patient aims from the surgery

Controlling patient expectations of what can be realistically achieved, as discussed elsewhere in this web site

Documenting all of these points in the consent form and or letters sent to patients
